He’d always known Shadowhunters as a society felt the need to control every aspect of their life, including pretending they didn’t have emotions. He’d just never really met a Shadowhunter who was so obviously bad at denying how he felt, and who was so incredibly sad because of it.

The bow is just a tool. You give the bow its power. Can’t you see it, Alec? […] You’re not hiding anymore. By admitting who you truly are, you’re no longer using part of your energy keeping everyone at a distance. It’s confidence, Alec. You’ve always been strong. Capable. Fierce. Now you’ve been unleashed. A true warrior.

He never expected to have something like this again, barely even dared to hope. Although, again might be the wrong word. He has been in love before, too often and too easily, some might say, but this is decidedly different. The way Alec makes him feel, fireworks going off in his chest whenever he’s near, everything and everyone else blurring to gray as soon as Alec enters a room―that’s something else. It’s frightening. It’s exhilarating. It makes him want to smile for no reason.

He can’t help but think about how much Alec has changed. Jace has only ever wanted the best for Alec, and seeing him here with Magnus, being affectionate despite Jace’s presence in the loft speaks volumes. It’s nice to know someone loves Alec – heart and soul. Jace wouldn’t want anything less for his brother.

He can’t believe he ever thought staying in the closet, hiding who he is, was what he planned to do for the rest of his life, can’t believe he almost missed out on having all of this. Not just Magnus, but this feeling of freedom and ease, this weight lifted from his heart, this unique feeling of being himself, of accepting himself.

He loves this moment. He loves this part of Magnus just like he loves all parts of Magnus, but this is special. This is something only those closest to Magnus see, and to be allowed this privilege makes him feel more important than he’s ever been told he could be. As a boy, he grew up in Jace’s shadow, always quieter, always less worthy of praise. It didn’t matter that he could handle a bow like he was born for it. He just wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t charismatic enough, wasn’t good-looking enough. He’s used to it. He doesn’t expect or need to be seen to perform his job, and he’s always thought he could live with that, could spend the rest of his life cleaning up Jace’s messes and playing uncredited supporting roles. But then Magnus saw him. He saw him and found him the most interesting thing in a room that also contained Jace and Isabelle, and Alec can’t go back. He can’t forget the dizzy elation of being somebody’s first choice.
