They’re both a little cracked around the edges, both their hearts are tender and bruised but they’re careful with each other, and though Alec can’t speak for Magnus, he knows that being with Magnus is healing his own. Magnus makes him feel special in a way that Alec had never felt before – never thought he’d be able to feel. It’s – incomparable.

The air is suddenly saturated with coloured powder, every colour of the spectrum mixing in the atmosphere, filling the sky with a sea of colour. And then the crowd erupts. It’s louder than it has been all day; people are jumping, shouting, kissing, hugging. The euphoria in the air is so thick it’s almost tangible.

The rainbow flag draped loosely around Alec’s shoulders feels weightless. It’s where it belongs, Alec supposes. He’s where he belongs.

LAST CHANCE to Sign Up to Thank a Shadowhunters Fic Author Today!

“When fic authors receive comments, they know, clearly, that someone enjoyed their writing. And while leaving kudos on a fanfic also allows you to say that you enjoy what you’ve read, as a fanfic author, I can tell you that there’s nothing sweeter than getting comments on my fics. I love reading them, and knowing that people enjoy my writing when I do.”

– icecat45, The Importance of Commenting on Fanfiction

Fanfiction has become a significant part of fandoms. Shadowhunters alone has 1,800 works on Fanfiction.net and over 17,000 works on Archive of Our Own. Fic writers have taken characters from the show and creatively dropped them into well-developed alternate universes and breathed new life into canon universe moments. Sharing their work freely with the world, they allow others in the fandom to step into their imaginings and experience their interpretations.

However, authors still often go underappreciated. This is where you come in.

Do you read Shadowhunters fics and want to show your appreciation beyond the typical comment? Sign up here to write a personalized thank you card to an author of your choice.

Use the Author Claims List to choose which fic writer you would like to write to. Please keep in mind that this sign-up process is operating on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Read the instructions below the cut or on the Author Appreciation Day page for more information.

General Event Guidelines

  • This is designed to be a positive event, showing support for our amazing authors and helping strengthen the bond between fic readers and writers. As such, I reserve the right to disregard and/or not post any negative responses.
  • Although this blog recs Malec-centric fics, everyone in the Shadowhunters fandom is welcome to participate in this event regardless of what pairings you prefer or kinds of fics you write.
  • However, this blog is also dedicated to healthy representations of characters and relationships based firmly on equality. I reserve the right to deny the opportunity for participation to those who write homophobic and/or racist material (i.e., erasing a minority or character’s sexuality).
  • Whether you’re relatively new to the fandom or you’ve been here for a while, everyone is welcome to participate.
  • If an author and/or reader would like to participate in both parts of the event, they are more than welcome to do so.
  • If authors would like to participate as both a reader and writer in either part of the event, they are more than welcome to do so.

Sign-Up Process

  • Through another sign-up form, fic writers who wished to receive a thank you card provided me with their pseudonym and self-identifying fic information. This can now be found on the Author Claims List, which will be updated as frequently as possible throughout the sign-up process.
  • Thank You Card Writers will be asked to give their first name / nickname and the best way to be contacted about who they have been paired up with (Tumblr username / Twitter handle / email address).
  • Using the Author Claims List, Thank You Card Writers will be asked to list their top five author choices in order from the one they would prefer to be assigned to the most (as 1) to the least (as 5). They will be paired with an author on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • I am hoping that the ranking system allows participants to be assigned to at least one of their choices. In the event that all five of your choices have already been assigned, I will reach out to you via the contact information above and have you choose someone else.
  • If Thank You Card Writers do not have an author preference and/or are willing to write more than one thank you card (should the need arise), they will have the opportunity to note that on the form.
  • The sign-up form will close on June 12th at 9:00PM EST. Thank You Card Writers will receive a message within 48 to 72 hours of it closing (if they have not been contacted already) about which author they have been paired with.
  • Following the sign-up process, Thank You Card Writers will have nearly two months to write their personalized thank you message. It must be submitted to the appropriate form by August 1st at 9:00PM EST.
  • Thank You Card Writers are not responsible for purchasing or designing a physical card, paying for postage for cards that will be mailed, or getting their card to their assigned author. I will take care of all of that once all messages have been submitted.
