I started as a reader after the show finished the first season. I was amazed by the talent that people had. It brought me joy and all the effort put into them showed. I found amazing writers and love when their fan fics update. The way they can create stories and ideas by using words made me think of writing one. I’ve gotten to know some amazing people because of their writing and love all of them dearly. Thank you to every writer for giving me joy even on a bad day. #SaveShadowhunters.

I’ve been reading Fanfiction— unwittingly and otherwise— for nearing a decade, writing it for half, and all the while I’ve been besotted with what it offers, what it can create. I have read some of the most brilliant, gorgeously done pieces of literature that is freely distributed by some of the most amazing, kind-hearted people, through Fanfiction. And I believe that fan fiction is where I write my strongest, where I can toy with different writing techniques, and where I could just let out whatever I’m feeling, from angst after a horrible day to fluffy sweetness for my most beloved OTPs.

My favorite thing about writing fanfiction is that I get to re-imagine the characters in different settings, or to put them in a different situation in a canon setting. I think it helps to get to know the characters better. I also really like writing fanfiction because you never know if someone out there is having a hard time, and your writing may very well help raise their spirits.

Fanfiction to me, is like the fun colourful sprinkles on top of a cake; with coda fics and canon re-writes, there’s the chance for more than the show is able to give within the time span of the episodes. AU’s allow so much room for fun and exploration, to take these characters that we love and hate and love to hate and just drop them in an interesting scenario to see how they’d handle it. And of course, sometimes it’s just fun to use the characters we’re familiar with as a foundation to write – anything. […] I don’t think there’s enough minutes in the day for me to list all of my favourite parts of writing and sharing fanfiction; I’ve been doing this for over five years, and every day I find something new to love about it. I love the characters in all of their own ways, and writing them has helped me understand them to a deeper level. Writing AU’s allows the chance to spin an entire world with these same characters as the focus, to send them down the metaphoric rabbit hole and see what comes from it. Writing canon is an exercise in itself, because you have to stay relatively within the confines of the given canon, sticking to the characters and the world whilst still making it your own (which honestly helps with my university studies, a bonus above all bonuses).
I think fanfiction is really special because it’s so multipurpose. You want an outlet to vent? Write it out! (You’re trans and you want your faves to be, too? Do it! Having friendship troubles? Write it!) You want to explore something you normally can’t? Do it! (Confused about your sexuality? Explore through fiction! Got a kink you’re not sure about? Write about it!) You want to change something about canon because canon is dumb? Do it! (You favorite character died? Not anymore, bitch! Two characters never talked about something they really should have? Write them some good communication!) And there a thousand other things you can do with fanfiction, and a thousand other reasons to write it (including just “i wanted to because it’s fun and i like it”) and I think that’s amazing. Plus, there’s so much more freedom then what you get in published media. Like, diversity? Hell yeah! Stories about minority people written by minority people with no censorship and shit? Fuck yes! Not to mention, on a way less serious note, WAY better sex scenes. Actually, a lot of fanfiction I’ve read is just generally better than most published books. Fanfiction is just truly amazing.

Writing for this fandom is amazing. When I started I thought I was terrible and didn’t want to continue. Then people really enjoyed it and encouraged me. I only started recently but I love sharing the ideas I have. Thanks to every reader I’m still writing and will never stop no matter the outcome of our show. This experience so far has shown me what I can do and what I can improve on. Now I’m starting to consider a career in writing and it all started from one person pushing me to post my fan fiction.
