Despite Magnus’ complaints about not being able to cook often, one of Alec’s favorite things was that they did manage to have regular, proper meals together. Irregular hours, of course, between Shadowhunter business and Magnus’ clients, and it was often takeout, but they had regular meals, nonetheless. Quiet times, just like this, the moon casting light through the windows, one of Magnus’ records playing softly, the smell of warm meats and breads and vegetables. When Alec had fallen in love with Magnus, he hadn’t realized he’d also be getting a home and a life to fall in love with too.

Alec hears those voices every day. Not just in his head, but in the Institute, in places like Pandemonium. When Alec fails, it’s not a secret. It’s a publicized disgrace. And Alec can’t let it get to him, and so he doesn’t. If he let other people convince him that he’s not worth the space he takes up, that he’s not worth a second and third chance, then he wouldn’t be able to find his way back.

I’ve lived for centuries, Alexander. I didn’t believe it was worth it, all the pain, love and heartache that came along with the years, to try again. Until now. You’ve challenged me and surprised me. More importantly, you’ve seen me. And chosen to continue to do so. Thank you for that.

It’s always a joy to hear Alec speak, to weave tales between his broad hands like a cat’s cradle made of vowels, a privilege that he’s one of few who truly get to see this free and comfortable side of Alec. Many people believe that he’s introverted, and closed-off, but that isn’t entirely true – Alec simply doesn’t open himself up easily. If he trusts you, as he trusts Magnus, then he’ll let you into his heart, he’ll bear his soul forth and spin stories of precious silver and gold, and it’s nothing short of a gift.

In some ways you’re too sensible for him, but it’s what he needs – someone who thinks about him when he won’t. He’s been burnt in the past, scorched to the bone, and he thinks it’s what he’s worth, but you and I both know that isn’t true.
