The Results Are In!

The response to the Fic Preference Poll honestly blew me away. Over the course of three and a half weeks, sixty-eight people participated. Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to vote! This wouldn’t have been possible without all of you!

The results have been tallied and are represented below. Please remember that fic recs will be based on your preferences from July 3rd to July 16th. 

Note: If the categories you voted for didn’t earn enough votes to be featured, please don’t be disappointed. Yes, I designed this poll to guide my recs for these two weeks specifically, but the results will also influence future recs as well.

Do you prefer one-shots or chaptered fics? 

For this question, participants were asked to vote for only one choice. The majority overwhelmingly went to chaptered fics. Although both will be featured throughout the two weeks, these will be featured more predominantly. 

Do you prefer canon-verse or alternate universe fics?

For this question, participants were able to vote for up to two categories. When all canon-verse (Canon Compliant, Canon AU, and This World Inverted) and alternate universe (Human AU, Crossovers, Other AU) fic categories were combined and compared, canon-verse was preferred. Both canon-verse and alternate universe fics will be featured for one week of recs, but based on these results canon-verse fics will go first. 

Of the canon-verse choices, the majority went to Canon AU fics, while Human AU fics were the most popular alternate universe choice. These will be featured more predominantly in their corresponding weeks. 

What themes do you prefer in canon-verse fics?

For this question, participants were able to vote for up to five themes. The top ten choices were Fluff, Domesticity, Hurt & Comfort, First Time, Soulmates, Angst, Established Relationship, Warlock Mark Reveal, Family, and Relationship Milestones. These themes will be predominantly featured during the seven days devoted to canon-verse fics. 

What themes do you prefer in alternate universe fics?

For this question, participants were once again able to vote for up to five themes. The majority went to Soulmates, Friends to Lovers, Coffee Shop, Domesticity, Crime, Established Relationship, College, Fluff, Pretend Relationship, and Fairy Tales / Fantasy. These themes will be predominantly featured during the seven days devoted to alternate universe fics.

Specific Requests

“I would love to see more Magnus focused fics! A lot of the fics seem to be Alec focused/centric or Magnus taking care of Alec physically or emotionally. I think this is probably a bigger trend in fandom where Magnus seems to be secondary to Alec, unfortunately, even if the fics are from Magnus’s POV.”

I have definitely noticed that the majority of the quality fics I’ve been able to find so far tend to be Alec-centric. As you point out, I think part of that is just a trend in the fandom. However, I have already started to focus a bit more on trying to find quality Magnus-centric fics. Thanks for your request!

“The Proposal AU.”

I’m not sure if this is a fic rec request or a request for someone to write, but I haven’t been able to find anything like this on A03. If someone knows about a fic that would fit this or if the person who submitted this could contact me with more information, I’d be willing to look into it a bit more, but keep in mind that I’m only here to rec quality fics that have already been written. Thanks for your participation!

“Rivals-to-partners, particularly in AUs (neighboring shop owners, professors, etc.)”

I will try my best to work this into the requests I post in response to this poll, but I have a lot of other criteria that I have to make sure I fulfill. If I’m not able to fit it in, you can count on recs with this theme being posted either before or after this event. Thanks so much for your request!

“Please only complete fics :)”

For these two weeks of recs, I will abide by this. However, outside of that time period, I cannot promise that I won’t rec any works-in-progress if I think they are high quality, especially original, and deserve to be highlighted. I know that some readers prefer to only read complete works – and sometimes I fall into that category myself – but there may be just as many who appreciate works-in-progress and I have to try to cater to everyone’s preferences. Whenever a work-in-progress is recced though, I will be sure to mark it as such and update the post when the fic is completed. Thank you for your input though! I’ll keep it in mind as I continue preparing recs, even outside of the two weeks in July.

“I love when they have problems and then they work it out. Whether it’s jealousy or something else.“

Quite a few longer fics include plots where they have to overcome some sort of obstacle, whether interior or exterior, and since chaptered fics will be predominantly featured during these two weeks I don’t think I’ll have any problems fulfilling this request. Thanks so much for participating!

“Honestly, I just need to see them happy and healthy. Have they drank enough water? No? Let’s have a 5000 word fic of them staying hydrated!”

This might be my favorite response 🙂 the way you worded this was fantastic. I’ll definitely try to include fics that feature fluffy, happy, and healthy storylines. Thanks for participating!
