A Million Somedays by wortschatz

They had talked about marriage before, hushed voices late at night. The first time it had slipped out of Alec’s mouth it had been fairly early on in their relationship, making Magnus’ heartbeat stutter and Alec blush, feeling like it was much too soon to bring up the topic. But Magnus had only smiled, the way he did now, whispering a soft someday as he was cupping Alec’s cheek before pressing a gentle kiss to his lips. Since then, marriage seemed inevitable, but not in a threatening way. They both took comfort in the knowledge that this was where their paths would lead one day.

It always stayed a someday though, various incidents in their personal and professional lives pushing the thought back. There really was no rush, because married or not they both knew that what they had would last forever. But now that Alec felt the flimsy piece of lace between his fingers, surrounded by his loved ones and eyes focused on the only one that mattered, he felt a new kind of urgency he hadn’t experienced before. He wanted someday to be soon, tomorrow, now. And from the look on Magnus’ face, he understood.

“Does it hurt that much?” Magnus asked, not waiting for an answer before sparking up his healing magic and sending wave after wave of warmth and care to soothe Alec’s headache.

“I wanted to pause the show so you didn’t miss any.” Alec said instead of answering.

Magnus stepped away from Alec’s desk and lay down lengthways on the Head of the Institute’s couch, working on keeping his proud smirk from slipping into one of those soft, affectionate smiles that Alec would point out and tease him about, not that Magnus nor Alec minded.

“Are Monday nights always this slow?” The new trainee – Alex, or something – stood awkwardly by the brick oven, hands shoved in the pockets of his black jeans. It was hot in the kitchen and hottest by the oven, but the tall young man wasn’t even breaking a sweat.

“This craft is less about divining the future and more about… getting perspective on the present,” corrects Magnus. “Would it really be too much trouble to indulge your newest – and by my guess, only – warlock friend in a harmless hobby?”

Alec knows he should probably be paying more attention to what’s going on around him but all he can focus on is the thumb repeatedly sweeping over the golden ring on his finger or the way Magnus’ eyes crinkle every time he smiles at him.
