I believe…I do believe marriage is a partnership—I shouldn’t have mocked you for that, I’m sorry…One built on passion, love, trust. I heard it said once that marriage should be a soft place to fall. That you can be more, strive higher, because you know there’s someone to catch you if you fail, someone who will remind you of everything you are. Who can lend you strength when you’ve lost yours.

Magnus doesn’t know which part of this is making his heart ache more. Is it that Alec, beautiful, innocent Alec, is doing all of this to repair what his parents broke? That he’s carrying such a heavy weight with no one to share it, that he’s expected to throw his life away into a loveless marriage so that the Clave will respect the Lightwood name again? Or is it that Alec has gotten under his skin, that his gentle voice flows through Magnus’ veins where his blood should be, that his heart has come out of hiding for the first time in over a century only to be kicked back into the depths of his chest because Alec won’t ever want Magnus like that?

Laying there, feeling his own heartbeat syncing with Alec’s, he didn’t think he’d let himself feel it before; feel just how much he’d fallen; just how much Alec meant to him. It was crazy, really. But it was real and there, building in his chest, smothering him. And he was terrified, because he’d been in love before but never, never like this.

You know what you’re really frightened of? Someone really loving you—heart and soul. Someone you can’t hide from. That person who sees all the ugly pieces of yourself that you’ve been hiding away for years. Those parts of yourself that have made countless other people run away. It is terrifying when you find the person who sees all of that, but doesn’t leave as fast as they can. Because you finally begin to let down walls, yet you’re constantly wondering what the one thing will be that breaks them. But the thing is…. When you find that person, there’s nothing that will drive them away. And that…. That is even more terrifying.
