This is a special night for him and his son. The only night in the year Alec lets Max stay up after midnight, so they can watch Perseids meteor shower together on the rooftop of their building. Alec doesn’t expect to find out they weren’t the only ones to get the idea.

He realised he’d cried out a name. Alec’s name. Because Alec made things stop hurting. He didn’t usually realise it, but he did. He made Magnus’ heart stop hurting. He quieted Magnus’ mind when the warlock was awake in the middle of the night, worrying about nothing. He calmed Magnus’ world, grounded him, pushed through the thick clouds of bullshit as though he didn’t even notice they were there.

He shook his head, trying to get those toxic thoughts out of his head, trying to ignore the hurt he felt spreading through his body and mind just as long so he could get to Magnus’s apartment. He quickly checked if there were cars coming, then crossed the street and continued his strides towards a certain glamoured apartment in Brooklyn Heights, towards the one and only person he wanted to see right now.

He revels in the feeling once more – the strong lines of Magnus’ chest against his back and the hands splayed flat over his stomach that rise and fall in tandem as he breathes – it feels like belonging, safety, and love.
