Summary:

The Talent to Charge is so much rarer than the Talent to Shield. Alec has always known he might not find a bond mate, that his Talent might go to waste, be too peculiar or not strong enough to entice anyone to bond. Now that he sees the candidates lined up in pairs, truly sees how few there are, the knowledge turns sour in his stomach.

All his years of training might have been for nothing if no one’s magic calls to his.

Summary:

“We’ll have that out to you in about a half hour,” the man at the pizza place said.

Magnus balanced the phone against his shoulder while gesturing at Catarina to put down the orange silk before she wrinkled it. This project was supposed to be done tomorrow and they were nowhere near ready. If Tessa hadn’t insisted he order a pizza he would have just worked straight through—one does not become the top designer in Brooklyn by stopping for silly things like food and sleep. “Great, thanks, love you.”

“Love you too,” the guy said.

Magnus hung up and turned back to his work before the words caught up to him. He froze, ears going hot as the sound of his two friends laughing broke his concentration. “Did I just…?”

Alec runs a pizza place in Brooklyn with his siblings. Magnus is an overworked and sleep-deprived fashion designer with too many deadlines. When he accidentally ends his pizza order with “I love you”, everything changes—for both of them.

Cancellation News: Where Do We Go From Here?

In light of the news that broke last night, I wanted to address all of you personally. I’d be lying if I said that I’m not feeling extremely uninspired right now. I was getting ready to work on recs when the first news article came across my feed on Twitter last night and it brought my plans to a screeching halt. It was hard enough to function long enough to tweet and retweet about saving the show. There was absolutely no way that I could concentrate on reading and reccing fics about our beautiful boys with the mindset that I had at that point.

My initial reaction was to postpone the You Pick the Tag Event a week so I could spend a bit more time on the #SaveShadowhunters campaign (and I still plan on taking part in it – if you’re following the blog’s Twitter account, you’ve probably already noticed) and grieve the potential loss of the show before jumping back into reading and reccing fics. But after taking a bit of time to think about it, I have decided that the event will proceed as originally planned. This week’s installment might not include as many recs as I hoped it would, but it will take place. There has been enough upheaval already this week and the last thing that I want to do is add to that. If I can help spread even a little bit of happiness in these trying times, then that’s what I’m going to do.

Marriage Proposal

Summary:

“Would you want a shadowhunter wedding?” Magnus asked then, evenly, calmly, taking a bite of his food after the fact to keep himself from giving away anything else, though he worried that even that question was giving too much away.

Alec chewed his own food in thought for a moment, washed it down with a sip of his drink. He seemed… caught off guard by the question, if the way his eyes had widened was anything to go by. Magnus’ heart began to race all the more, and he wondered if Alec would catch on to his plans, now that he had said that; Alexander was a smart man, if anyone would be able to figure out that Magnus planned on proposing before he actually did it, it would be his Alexander.

“We’ve… never really talked about marriage before,” Alec replied, sheepish, cheeks tinted in an endearing way that was all the more illuminated by the glow of the candlelight.

“We’re talking about it now,” Magnus replied softly, reaching a hand out to touch Alec’s in a reassuring way.

Summary:

Magnus might be screwed.

Okay, scratch that. Magnus is screwed, there’s no use beating around the bush at the moment. Not when he’s probably about to die, or at least get captured by Valentine. At the very best, he hopes that it’s actually Valentine himself that finds him instead of a lower level squadron of nobody supers. It’d be so much less embarrassing.

Sign Up to Thank a Shadowhunters Fic Author Today!

“When fic authors receive comments, they know, clearly, that someone enjoyed their writing. And while leaving kudos on a fanfic also allows you to say that you enjoy what you’ve read, as a fanfic author, I can tell you that there’s nothing sweeter than getting comments on my fics. I love reading them, and knowing that people enjoy my writing when I do.”

– icecat45, The Importance of Commenting on Fanfiction

Fanfiction has become a significant part of fandoms. Shadowhunters alone has 1,800 works on Fanfiction.net and over 17,000 works on Archive of Our Own. Fic writers have taken characters from the show and creatively dropped them into well-developed alternate universes and breathed new life into canon universe moments. Sharing their work freely with the world, they allow others in the fandom to step into their imaginings and experience their interpretations.

However, authors still often go underappreciated. This is where you come in.

Do you read Shadowhunters fics and want to show your appreciation beyond the typical comment? Sign up here to write a personalized thank you card to an author of your choice.

Use the Author Claims List to choose which fic writer you would like to write to. Please keep in mind that this sign-up process is operating on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Read the instructions below the cut or on the Author Appreciation Day page for more information.

General Event Guidelines

  • This is designed to be a positive event, showing support for our amazing authors and helping strengthen the bond between fic readers and writers. As such, I reserve the right to disregard and/or not post any negative responses.
  • Although this blog recs Malec-centric fics, everyone in the Shadowhunters fandom is welcome to participate in this event regardless of what pairings you prefer or kinds of fics you write.
  • However, this blog is also dedicated to healthy representations of characters and relationships based firmly on equality. I reserve the right to deny the opportunity for participation to those who write homophobic and/or racist material (i.e., erasing a minority or character’s sexuality).
  • Whether you’re relatively new to the fandom or you’ve been here for a while, everyone is welcome to participate.
  • If an author and/or reader would like to participate in both parts of the event, they are more than welcome to do so.
  • If authors would like to participate as both a reader and writer in either part of the event, they are more than welcome to do so.

Sign-Up Process

  • Through another sign-up form, fic writers who wished to receive a thank you card provided me with their pseudonym and self-identifying fic information. This can now be found on the Author Claims List, which will be updated as frequently as possible throughout the sign-up process.
  • Thank You Card Writers will be asked to give their first name / nickname and the best way to be contacted about who they have been paired up with (Tumblr username / Twitter handle / email address).
  • Using the Author Claims List, Thank You Card Writers will be asked to list their top five author choices in order from the one they would prefer to be assigned to the most (as 1) to the least (as 5). They will be paired with an author on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • I am hoping that the ranking system allows participants to be assigned to at least one of their choices. In the event that all five of your choices have already been assigned, I will reach out to you via the contact information above and have you choose someone else.
  • If Thank You Card Writers do not have an author preference and/or are willing to write more than one thank you card (should the need arise), they will have the opportunity to note that on the form.
  • The sign-up form will close on June 12th at 9:00PM EST. Thank You Card Writers will receive a message within 48 to 72 hours of it closing (if they have not been contacted already) about which author they have been paired with.
  • Following the sign-up process, Thank You Card Writers will have nearly two months to write their personalized thank you message. It must be submitted to the appropriate form by August 1st at 9:00PM EST.
  • Thank You Card Writers are not responsible for purchasing or designing a physical card, paying for postage for cards that will be mailed, or getting their card to their assigned author. I will take care of all of that once all messages have been submitted.

Anonymous asked:

Can the authors who signed up to receive cards also sign up to write them? I submitted my info for both, but I would also really love to write some thank you cards for the other authors on the list.

You absolutely can! Thank you so much for your interest in both aspects!

Author Appreciation Day Update

As originally posted to the blog’s affiliated Twitter account

In advance of tomorrow’s reminder for Author Appreciation Day, I need to voice something.

I realize that people have lives outside of the fandom and that taking a short poll takes a lot less time than signing up for and writing a short thank you message. 39 people (out of my over 1400 followers) participated in the You Pick the Tag Event last week, which is one of the highest numbers I’ve had in nearly a year and a half of operating the blog. Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely excited that people seem to like this event and want to take part in it.

But we’ll be halfway through the Thank You Card Writer sign-ups this week, only needing 26 people total to take part in it, and to have well under half of the number of You Pick the Tag participants signed up (and well under half of the number needed for every author to be written to) is a little disheartening. I hoped readers especially would want to take a bit of time to thank an author in the fandom.

Like I said, I realize that people have things going on and time can be extremely precious. But the same can be said for the time authors spend thinking about, planning, writing, editing, and re-writing fics that they freely share with all of us. They spend days, months, even years on beautiful, elaborate pieces of art that we get to read because they take time out of their busy schedules to make that happen. And the fact that over half of the people who have signed up are authors themselves who want to spend more of their time showing gratitude and support to their fellow writers doesn’t surprise me at all, because the authors in this fandom are always beyond supportive of each other.

But I would really like to see more readers sign up as well, because fic writers don’t get nearly the amount of credit that they deserve for all of their hard work and dedication.

So let me break down the Thank You Card Writer responsibilities, just in case they aren’t clear.

  • You need to choose an author to write to from the Author Claims List, as these are authors who have provided me with mailing information, enabling me to send their card to them. You can view it by clicking here.
  • You need to write a personalized thank you message.  It does not need to be extremely long or elaborate. Therefore, you do not need to spend a long time on it if you’re keeping it relatively short. This is your message; what you write is completely up to you.

  • Submissions aren’t due until August 1st. You will have a month and a half to write and submit it, so you have quite a bit of time to work with. You can complete it based on when you have availability in your schedule.

  • Once you submit it, your responsibilities are complete. You do NOT need to purchase a thank you card yourself. You do NOT need to send the thank you card yourself or pay for postage. I will take care of all of that once the thank you messages have been submitted.

This really is not meant to come across as aggressive or like a guilt trip. I simply want to make the event’s progress as transparent as possible, lay out exactly what is expected from participants, and hopefully encourage anyone who is considering participating to please sign up at their earliest convenience. You can do so by clicking here. Sign-ups close on June 12th.

To the authors who signed up to receive a card and may be reading this: rest assured that you WILL receive one, regardless of how low participation ends up being. I will write them myself if I have to. Thank you all for sharing your wonderful representations of Alec & Magnus!
