“Alexander,” Magnus interrupted, thumb wiping a tear that slid down his cheek, leaning forward and claiming his lips in another kiss, like how Alec kissed him, so full of need and love and it was enough to get Alec to stop and focus on him. Taking Alec’s hand, he trailed it up to his chest, Alec’s palm pressing right above his heart, feeling it beat steadily. “I’m alive, I’m here with you, I’m not going anywhere.”

Gone were his brown eyes and in their place were golden, slitted eyes filled with a rage that would buoy even Valentine’s. His muscles rippled like those of a tiger as he stormed forward and stalked his prey.

Bathed in the white light, he looked like an angel of death.

God, Alec just wants to not be here any more. He wants to scramble his way over there and grab Magnus’ hand and bury his face in Magnus’ shoulders and hold him close. He wants to tug Magnus by the sleeve of his jacket and head back down those steps and out into the morning, and just be Alec, a man who has not lost all that he has just found, and not be the Head of the Institute, or a Lightwood, or even a Shadowhunter anymore. He wants to feel Magnus’ mouth again, a grounding reminder of promises shared, because the world feels like shrapnel sometimes and it’s cutting him up the longer he stands here, buffeted by the pyroclastic fallout of the night suffered.
