Summary:
Alec’s feet pound on the floor of the Institute, steps echoing in the halls. His breath comes heavy, air being forced into his lungs against its will. He feels like the walls are closing in on him as he runs and runs and yet is wading through water, rounding corner after corner. Once in a while, he sees Magnus, standing just a few feet away. But every time he tries to call out to him, the words stay stuck in his throat. Knives are lodged in his mouth, leaving his shouts blood soaked and broken.

A nightmare leaves Alec shaken as he wakes up in Magnus’ loft.

He used to be so much better at this; burying his hurt, his sadness, better at being resigned to never getting what he wanted. He’d let it harden around his heart like a cage of black obsidian, let it drive him to work harder, be better, become the perfect soldier. And then Magnus came along. Magnus never needed to chip away at Alec’s walls because he’d snapped them into oblivion as effortlessly as the magic that flicks from his fingers.

A few weeks ago an eager Alec pushing him into his bedroom would have been very welcome indeed. But that was before he really knew. A short piece on what might have happened after 2×07.
Magnus was his whole world- he made his world better and brighter and livelier. Alec remembered life before Magnus, when he was still in the closet and scared of being himself and never laughed or went out with his friends, terrified that his eyes would linger on a cute guy for too long, or that he would slip up and accidentally say something that would give himself away. He was so scared back then… and then Magnus had literally barged into his life, taken him by the hand, and shown him all the amazing possibilities in front of him. Showed him what true happiness could be. Showed him unconditional love and friendship.
