Summary:
The squeak of the patio door sounded inordinately loud when he pushed it open. Even though he’d known this would be where he’d find Magnus, he still sucked in a gasp when he saw his shape lined out against the bright Brooklyn skyline. It wasn’t so much Magnus’ presence that surprised him – Alec had expected to find him there – but his position. He was leaning over the balcony railing, gazing down into the steep drop falling away below him.
He should have known. He really should have known that was the reason Magnus was upset.

No. No no no. Looking at Alec would be an absolutely terrible idea. If he looked, he’d see Alec falling again. And his imagination would build on that memory to show him what would have happened if he’d arrived just half a second later.
“I get jittery after a fight that intense. Adrenaline, I suppose. Does that happen to you?” The bottle rattled alarmingly loudly against the rim of the glass and he put them both down.
“Yeah. But it’s time to stand down now.” But Alec’s breath warmed his hair on the back of his head, accompanied by the lightest brush of a kiss, and the tension drained from Magnus. He sagged under the hands resting on his shoulders like a puppet whose strings had been cut.
“Alexander–” Part of him wanted the shrug off Alec’s hands and pull himself together, and part of him wanted to just fall into those and let them bear him up for a while.
It had been so very long since he’d had someone he could count on for that.

Magnus understands that, but he’s not sure that Alec does. The spell was not created to force any of them into action. It creates hallucinations of deep fears, the fears that dredge up hollowness and self-loathing, that create suspicion and hatred. That’s all. But where others had fought among themselves and attempted to hurt each other, Alec’s fears made him turn on himself, and there is little Magnus can do to stop that from happening again.
He can’t fix this with magic, no matter how much he longs to try.
